BalticSeaFeed – Developing Sustainable Feed from Baltic Marine Resources

The BalticSeaFeed project focuses on the production of animal feed products based on marine resources.

Eutrophication is a common challenge for all countries in the Baltic Sea region. In light of this, the BalticSeaFeed project underscores the necessity to reduce the nutrient output from farming. It suggests that animal feed products from marine resources such as algae and mussels are well-suited for this purpose. One reason is that marine resources are derived from the sea and in that sense recycled. According to BalticSeaFeed, research shows that the output of nutrients is lower from animals fed with sea products in comparison with traditional feed.

Against this background, the project focuses on the production of marine feed products. The goal is to bring more products to the market and to establish a sustainable and innovative Baltic marine resources-based feed industry. This requires a critical mass of commercial mussel and algae farms in the Baltic Sea. Also, it requires transnational collaborations between a wide range of stakeholders, including experts, industry partners, researchers, technology developers and policymakers. Hence, the BalticSeaFeed project will serve as a hub to exchange information and coordinate the work of the stakeholders. In the long run, the project will contribute to a more sustainable animal production in the Baltic Sea region and new business opportunities and income sources for fishermen and others in coastal areas. The activities include monthly online conference calls and the production of a report on Baltic marine resources.
