Call for applications - Project grants for alumni of the Swedish Institute's Young leaders Visitors Program

The call for applications for 2010 is now closed. The next call for applications will be announced in 2011.

The Swedish Institute is announcing a call for application for the alumni of the Young Leaders Visitors program. Alumni can apply for grants initial start up of a project idea. With this initiative the Swedish Institute aims to follow up and maintain the network of young leaders from the public and private sector created under the scope of the Swedish Institute's Young Leaders Visitors Program. 

 

The Swedish Institute encourages initiatives which promote relations between Sweden and the countries included in the program. Initiatives shall illustrate the aim to enhance openness, freedom of expression and responsible leadership with a focus on social media as a tool for social change. One requirement for being granted funding is that the grants are used in a way which directly promote and strengthen the network between Sweden and alumni in the Swedish Institute’s Young Leaders Visitors Program.

The Swedish Institute's Young Leaders Visitors Program operate in the framework of public diplomacy. The program aim to lay the foundation for lasting, mutually beneficial relations between young opinion-leaders in Sweden and a number of countries in the MENA region and as a result generate interest in values such as openness, freedom of expression and democracy. Projects and activities which can be granted funding shall aim at keeping these relationships alive. This can include gatherings for alumni in the Swedish Institute’s Young Leaders Visitors Program with external speakers and other invited guests, relation-building activities that include short trips to Sweden, participation in events etc. 

Application instructions and criteria

Grant applications will be accepted from Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Sweden, Tunisia, the West Bank/Gaza and Yemen and should be sent to the Swedish Institute using an online application form. Applications should describe the objective, layout and schedule of the project and the amount of funding applied for.

Funding can be applied for mobility, fees or honorariums, materials, printing, seminar costs or the like. However, SI funding may not be used for overhead or administrative costs. The maximum amount that can be granted per project is SEK 25,000. A total of 10 grants are available.

Application period

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis during 2010, although funding will only be granted for projects that are carried out by November 15, 2010, at the latest. A complete report of any project that will be granted funding must be submitted to the Swedish Institute by December 15, 2010, at the latest. 

Evaluation

A key criterion in assessing applications is how the project can strengthen bonds between Sweden and the networks that have been developed under the scope of the Swedish Institute’s Young Leaders Visitors Program. Projects need not be limited to maintaining existing networks but may also be aimed at expanding them to relevant target groups in every participating country.

 

Selection criteria

Grants will be given to those projects that demonstrate the greatest potential to expand the network to those outside the network.

Selection will be made based on whether the initiative will

  • Strengthen the ties between Sweden and the specified country/countries
  • Whether it is innovative and creative in its approach.
  • Clearly target themes such as openness, freedom of expression and responsible leadership.
  • Use social media as a tool for communicating the project

 

Evaluation committee

An Evaluation committee consisting of representatives from the SI will assess the applications.
