Linnaeus 300 − a reason to celebrate!
2007 sees the 300th anniversary of the birth of Sweden’s visionary natural scientist Carl Linnaeus. The occasion will be marked by countless activities, not only in his homeland but also all around the world. For Linnaeus, even in his own lifetime, was a figure of truly global significance.
Linnaeus' immense legacy is alive and well in Sweden. We can see it not only in the country’s rich tradition of scientific discovery but also in our attitudes and values. These include the distinctive Swedish way of relating to the natural world.
The 300th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate Swedish science and cutting-edge research. It is also an occasion to encourage a dialogue about life on our planet today and the shape of things to come − in true Linnaean spirit.
The Swedish Institute is involved in a wide range of activities this anniversary year. In a number of countries we are supporting scientific conferences and symposia. Many of these are collaborative efforts between the SI, Swedish embassies and their local partners and the National Linnaeus Secretariat and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
Linné 2007.
For use in conjunction with Linnaeus events, the SI has produced Carl Linnaeus, a 44-page publication by Gunnar Broberg (available in nine languages), a multimedia presentation on CD-ROM, a poster and a set of postcards.
Herbarium Amoris, the photographic homage to Carl Linnaeus by Swedish photographer Edvard Koinberg will be continuing its international tour in 2007 (http://www.herbariumamoris.se).
Last, but absolutely not least, SI’s most far-reaching initiative is www.Linnaeus300.com, the English-language website which presents some of the most exciting research going on in Sweden today and is also a forum for discussion about science, the natural world and man’s place in it today.
Other events being organised by the Swedish Institute in collaboration with a number of partners are press visits to Sweden and The Great Linnaeus School Challenge, an environmental competition for schools The Great Linnaeus School Challenge.
