A total of twelve thematic partnership projects were approved for funding 2012.

Innovative energy transition

 
ReENERGY — common visions for sustainable energy systems for the cities in the Baltic region.
The purpose is to create an international, cross-sector platform in order to share visions regarding sustainable energy systems. One of many goals is for the ReENERGY network to become a sustainable platform for international cooperation.

EFFEKT
— a platform based on dialogue for energy- and resource efficiency in the Baltic region

The increase in energy demand, “peak oil”, climate change and unsustainable use of natural resources remain in focus for this project. The purpose is to influence agents on a local, regional, national and Baltic level to become more energy- and resource efficient.

Clean water and sustainable food production

A common framework to support public management of cross-boundary water resources
According to the project guidelines the participants will commonly identify cross-boundary challenges within water source management. One of the purposes is to prepare for cross-boundary measurements (investments).

Competence building for ecological farming as a key function in a recycling society
Sweden, Lithuania and Belarus will establish a sustainable cooperation and exchange experiences in the development of ecological farming. One of the goals of this project is for ecological recycling societies to be able to market themselves as tourist destinations in the three participating countries.

Closing the cycle through the excavation of old landfills in the Baltic Sea region
Leaking landfills along the Baltic Sea is a problem. The project aims to initiate new excavation projects in order to prevent leakage. Increased knowledge of excavation methods is another important objective of the project.

Knowledge-intensive services

Education in entrepreneurship and innovation
The main purpose is to increase the level of commercialization for innovations and business ideas that stem from educations in the technical and natural science fields. The project will work with best practices, and develop and apply innovative approaches for education in entrepreneurship.

InnoValueNet: Transnational network for the promotion of creativity and innovation in the Baltic region
InnoValueNet is a cross-sector, transnational network in the Baltic region that will unite various stakeholders who support innovation and entrepreneurship. The network will identify challenges and needs of the university and community stakeholders, and develop a strategic innovation agenda for partnership.

Regional Challenges

Sustainable rural development through the participation, innovation and entrepreneurship of young people
This is a flagship project of the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea region. The aim is to connect youth organizations in rural areas with organizations working with innovation support. The long-term aim is to give young people more opportunities and a growing interest in building their future in rural areas.

Collaboration to prevent antibiotic resistance in the Baltic region, BARN
BARN (Baltic Antibiotic Resistance collaborative Network) is behind the project which aims to reduce the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance in the Baltic region. Belarus, Russia, Georgia and Moldova will be included in the collaboration through the thematic partnership.

Real time e-health services for distance consultation and ultrasound diagnostics in the Baltic region
An assumption for the project is that e-health can help increase the availability and quality of healthcare. As one part of increased e-health, a remote ultrasound services for diagnostics is to be developed within the project. The ultrasound service will help reduce inequalities in terms of access to high-quality care in different parts of the Baltic Sea region.

Implementation of guidelines for standardization and quality assurance of diagnostics, treatment and epidemiological monitoring
The project strives to achieve greater quality control and harmonization of the health care systems that treat sexually transmitted diseases. The principal applicant is a part of the Eastern European Network for Sexual and Reproductive Health (EE SRH Network), which consists of 18 countries.

From the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea: life-long education and promotion of mental health
An aging population is a common challenge in the Baltic Sea region. Good mental health among older people and the importance of lifelong learning are key components of the project, which partly seeks to develop an education that focuses on mental health for the elderly.
