Work in Sweden
SI has been assigned by the Government to market Sweden as an attractive place to work. Since December 2008, Sweden has applied new flexible rules for labor immigration from non-European countries – rules that make Sweden one of the most open countries in the world for this type of immigration.
Sweden differs from most countries that have introduced such a reform in that it does not operate any quota systems or impose limitations of any other kind as regards professional categories.
To communicate Sweden’s unique position to the world, the SI has developed the web portal Workinginsweden.se at the Government’s request. It provides information about the practical steps would-be labor immigrants need to take, but also describes the advantages of choosing Sweden as a work destination.
Given its broad mandate, SI is well placed to combine labor market needs, migration policy opportunities and the interests of higher education forcefully and effectively so as to strengthen Sweden’s international attractiveness as a study and career nation.
Workinginsweden.se is directed at skilled professionals in all non-European countries and, besides providing an information and marketing channel to potential labor immigrants, is a useful tool for all who work with migration issues in Sweden.
The web portal describes the permit application process step-by-step in a comprehensible manner, and gives the visitor the option of applying for a work permit online. It also describes employees’ rights and obligations and what it is like to live and work in Sweden, so that applicants know what they can expect.
There are considerable synergies between the SI’s labor market assignment and its mandate to market Sweden as a study destination. These activities are harmonized so as to achieve the greatest possible impact.
