Study in Sweden

SI has been assigned to inform foreign students about Swedish higher education and to market this sector abroad. Part of the assignment involves cooperating with universities and colleges and with other relevant parties.

One of the Swedish Institute’s tasks is to make students and researchers abroad more aware of and more interested in Swedish university-level training and research.

In its 2009 bill entitled ‘Knowledge without borders — higher education in the era of globalisation', the Government states that the marketing of Swedish higher education ”should be primarily directed at attracting the best students and the most competent teachers and researchers in competition with the internationally most attractive and well-established higher education institutions”.

Free movers

Students who travel on their own initiative — known as free movers — have been defined as the SI’s prime target group for information about studying in Sweden. People in this target group are largely to be found outside the EU/EEA, and will be required to pay tuition fees from fall semester 2011.

SI’s most important channel for disseminating information about studies in Sweden is the website Studyinsweden.se. In addition, SI builds networks with foreign students and researchers and runs a web-based community for the purpose — Swedenintouch.se. This site also serves as a tool for marketing Sweden as a study destination.

Trade fairs and conferences

SI also takes part in — and supports the participation of Swedish missions in — trade fairs and conferences abroad that promote exchange in higher education and the recruitment of advanced students. For further information about participation in student fairs, contact Niclas Boborg (details below).

Sweden as an attractive place of study

Together with 31 Swedish universities and colleges, SI is taking part in a project designed to create a platform for the coordination of efforts to market Sweden internationally as a study destination. There is a strong need to promote and strengthen Sweden’s image as an attractive place of study. This is particularly important in view of the introduction of tuition fees for students from countries outside the EU/EEA.

SI is also part of the Forum for Internationalization, along with such bodies as the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Foundation for International Co-operation in Research and Higher Education (Stint), Invest Sweden, the Swedish Migration Board and Sida. This forum is jointly chaired by the National Agency for Higher Education and the International Programme Office for Education and Training.

The forum was established on the initiative of the Ministry of Education as a means of improving coordination between the ministries and agencies concerned with the internationalization of higher education. Swedish universities and colleges are also represented in the forum, via the Association of Swedish Higher Education.
