Strategy and Priorities

The Swedish Institute (SI) acts as a clear and coherent representative of Sweden and of Swedish skills, values and experience in the world, in close cooperation with Sweden’s missions abroad and with the aid of Swedish and foreign partners. The agency pursues its activities in accordance with certain strategic priorities that you can read more about below.

To create the right conditions for a strong, clearly presented image of Sweden abroad – and to thereby reach out with our message and establish strong ties with the world around us – a common platform for the dissemination of information about Sweden has been developed as part of the work of the Council for the Promotion of Sweden (NSU) The principal aim is for Sweden to be perceived  by others as a development-oriented country in which people and the environment take precedence. A progressive country characterized by innovative ideas, openness, consideration and authenticity – by social and ecological sustainability.

To a considerable extent, the common platform also has links to Swedish development cooperation since work on Sweden’s image goes hand in hand with pro-dialogue activities, knowledge exchange and reciprocal relationships with other countries in all fields. This is particularly evident with regard to Swedish skills, experience and values that directly affect development aid activities. Many of Sweden’s high-profile issues and areas of expertise in the aid sphere – such as democracy, freedom of expression and sustainable development – are among the aspects that set us apart and generate goodwill on our behalf, and thereby help put Sweden on the map.

Globalization also makes clear something that is becoming increasingly apparent to all – that the challenges faced by humanity can only be solved if we confront them together. A distinguishing feature of SI’s international work, therefore, is its basic message, Sweden: Let’s Share the Future, and the conviction that Sweden, as a development-oriented country in which people and the environment take precedence, has important experience, skills and approaches to contribute to the struggle for global development.
